  1. Would’ve felt bad had this contained 4 GB RAM and 64 GB internal. Although I wish my ZenFone 2 had the dual SIM capable of data, but for my use case 4 GB RAM and the double internal storage is more essential. So as far as I’m concerned Asus hasn’t necessarily outdone its awesome flagship of earlier this year, quite yet.

      • My only issue is why the he’ll they didn’t put removable batteries in the original ZenFone 2 line? I got the 300 dollar gsm unlocked model from Amazon twice now because the first one broke between being sat on in my back pocket and dropped nearly 12 times after the fact but the battery removal issue has always kinda bugged me about the original, what happens if my battery won’t hold a charge as I’m driving to job sites? I would have to take it to someone and pay them to do it and they are as likely to break the phone as I am if I tried to do it myself.

        • I agree with the issue of the non-removable battery. This was a significant compromise for me when I bought this. I told myself previously I’d never buy a phone without a removable battery. However, between the outstanding price and the necessity for 4GB of RAM I caved into the non-removable battery.

  3. I see that it is LTE dual sim dual active however in your specs you state the following:
    Dual micro-SIM
    – Primary SIM – 2G/3G/4G
    – Secondary SIM – 2G/3G

    According to your specs only 1 sim is LTE and the other is reduced to 2/3G.

    Other dual LTE phones say you can only use LTE for data on 1 sim but you can use LTE for voice/text on either. Is this not the case? Is this being software blocked?

    Is quick charge available for this model? NFC? Since this is a new model is is scheduled for the M update?

    • Hey there – great question! The specs do say 2G/3G for the 2nd SIM because when both SIMs are being used, and the 1st SIM is used for LTE, hardware limitations set the 2nd SIM to only 3G – meaning LTE can’t run concurrently. However, in the software, you can set which SIM you want to run LTE. Quick charge isn’t supported for this device, and there isn’t NFC available. There hasn’t been official word from HQ regarding M yet. But I can assure you the team is working very hard to please everyone and understands the eagerness for the latest OS. Right now, they are concerned with giving people the best experience possible on Lollipop.

I am currently in Canada, and I am thinking of purchasing this phone, I have two SIM, both carriers don’t support 2G network, so If I get this phone and use LTE on one SIM, I will be able to use 3G for voice/text on the second SIM ? Just confirming, because all the dual SIM phones I have tried so far, drop the second SIM to 2G status if the first one is using LTE, which won’t work for me.

    • I’m not sure if it will work because 3G voice requires UMTS. Typically, when you need to make a voice call, it’ll revert to 2G, so I think it’ll be the same as other devices. What you can do is change which SIM you want to run LTE through, because on 4G you should be able to call.

    • Hi Xander, I’ve run the benchmark. On the left is the ZenFone 2 Laser, and on the right is the ZenFone 2 4GB/64GB model (not in performance mode). During the benchmark, I think the laser topped at 15-17 frames per second, but the regular ZenFone 2 was at about 30-35. So there is a tradeoff, but for regular things like browsing and playing light games, or watching youtube videos, you should be fine. Here’s a picture from the test: http://imgur.com/vh1eEEz

I’m getting conflicting opinions on this, but with all the different models of Zenfones out there, I can never be sure if what someone is saying is true for this model, another one, or simply wrong. I’m asking specifically about the zenfone 2 laser (ZE551KL) with 16 Gb of internal space.

      1) Can’t comment on India, I’m with the North American team, but I can try to find out!
      2) It’s possible, but not recommended. Only use ASUS phones with ASUS chargers
      3) I believe it only supports the 2.4GHz band since it is 802.11BGN

  22. Please clean up the specs that are being thrown around for this new device. Prior to about Nov 11, detailed specs were not readily available from Asus, and retailers websites listed varying specs. Specifically, regarding the inclusion, or lack thereof of LTE Band 12. Bottom line; the phone doesn’t support it, regardless of what a retailer’s spec list may state. This was problematic for me, as I purchased the phone (from a retailer whose spec list specifically stated it did support LTE Band 12) for use on the T-Mobile network via Ting, only to find out upon trying to activate the phone that it would only support 2G. No 3G and no 4G, whether due to the notorious LTE Band 12 issue, or not (certainly wouldn’t explain the lack of 3G service). I don’t know if this is a T-Mobile or a Ting issue, and frankly, I don’t care. The whole business of this network, that network, GSM, CDMA, unlocked, doomed to die locked to Network X, and so on is far more complicated than it ever had to be. And more often than not, it leaves the consumer holding the bag. And the bill. I’m just glad my particular retailer was understanding of my situation, and was willing to accept a return, even though their unlocked phone policy wasn’t supposed to allow it.

I would like to know whether or not ASUS will sell OEM replacement batteries for the Laser.
        I would prefer to keep the Zenfone for as long as possible, and knowing Asus’ hardware dependability the only thing that would limit device life would mostly be limited to battery degradation.

  37. Just received my 32GB Laser from B&H Photos. This is only 8 months after my ZenFone 2 550ML. Hope Asus will continue to make great phones at reasonable prices and that more people notice this.

    One drawback is why the built-in SMS app still cannot have customized ring tones? Almost every other app – phone, WhatsApp, etc etc can pick from my own list of ogg files. Anyway to overcome this?

  38. As of Jan 2016, I still haven’t found a place that sells Zenfone2 laser battery. This is the reason I have been holding off buying this phone. I have ditched Samsung since they move to non-removable battery.
    I normally have 3 batteries for my phone, 1 for use, 1 for backup, and one to be charged.

    However, if I found a good price on LG G4 before zenfone2 laser battery is available, then bye bye ASUS.

  41. I just bought the ZenFone 2 laser. I really like the phone but I am having some issues with all of my photos coming out blurry. My biggest gripe however is, like mentioned above no CDMA support. I bought an AT&T sim and service, especially in my office is non existent. Because of this I’ll probably have to return the phone which is unfortunate.

I phoned Asus Tech Support which had me do a factory shut down, which did not work. Now I must do a phone swap – my brand new phone for a refurbished one! I didn’t drop the phone, or do anything to cause this, but I have to pay a $25 processing fee and they refuse to give me a new phone to replace my phone, which is basically brand new. I know nothing about the refurbished phone they are sending me; it could have sat at the bottom of the lake for all I know, and to add insult to injury, I have to pay $25 . Their other option was for me to send my phone in to them and wait a minimum of 2-3 weeks before I might have gotten my phone back. Even after I told them that I needed my phone because I would soon be having cancer surgery, this refurbished phone crap was the best they would do. I liked this phone but I don’t think I would buy another Asus product based on what I feel was poor customer service. Keep that in mind.

    I think there’s a QA problem with this model. I bought a new one from Amazon last December, as in fulfilled by Amazon. After rebooting it for the second time, the screen would only come on for a fraction of a second and that’s it. It would flash just once on each reboot. Amazon couldn’t replace, apparently because it wasn’t available at the same price when I bought it. So I got a refund.

    I then purchased another one from B&H Photo (last December). After a few weeks, the microphone worked intermittently. Going through mic on a cable was ok, going through mic on Bluetooth was ok. Now I dread that the built-in mic would go dead and I have to go through the same experience you had.

  48. The phone has an issue with data slowing down both Wi-fi and Cellular throughput rates when bluetooth is turned on. Throughput is at a crawl and I can’t figure out why. However, as soon as I turn bluetooth off, data rates jump back up to normal, all other variables being exactly the same. I have tested this over and over again and have isolated it to bluetooth being the issue. Why does the bluetooth seem to create some sort of interference with data throughput on this phone? It is beyond infuriating because I can’t use a major functionality.

    Zenfone 2 Laser has been out for 8 months and it still costs the exact same price as when it launched – don’t think so! I’d rather wait it out.

Sir i m using your asus company zenfone max since from last six months..really its very gud mobile..it got a great display undr jst 10k…the quality of the display by playing fullhd videos was awsome..i compared this with lot of other mobile companies like samsung j7,mi Note 3,etc..in all tht asus display got verygud display colour quality..when it is compared the asus display quality quite little greater than other companies..it got amazing display brightness so tht no company can stand opposite of asus when it comes to video quality of display which got more brightness than all other companies…

    • There are two slight variants of this phone which Asus (and other manufacturers too) curiously does not highlight. There is the international version which does not support Band 4 AWS which T-Mobile and some Canadian telcos use. And there is the North American version which has Band 4 AWS.

      If you have purchased it from the Philippines, most likely it is the international variant.

      Most North American telcos who use Band 4 usually also operate on other bands (that this phone support) in the same network, but some areas could be exclusively Band 4. When your phone is unable to use Band 4, you will be connected by 2.5G EDGE only. Your phone data icon will show the E symbol and it is like only a few bits per second.

      For voice calls, it should be fine.
