One thing that’s both fun and frustrating about the PC hardware market is just how quickly things can change. Every time it looks like a new normal has settled in, something changes, and the ripple effects across the industry can be quite dramatic. Some changes are more frustrating than fun, and that’s admittedly an understatement. The prime example right now is the memory shortage. Incredible things are happening across the PC landscape, but too many people are standing on the outside looking in because they can’t find memory and storage at prices that fit their budget.
You do have options. There are ways that PC builders are side-stepping the crisis, like watching for combo deals that bundle memory products with other key PC components. Other folks are investing their upgrade budget into tech that’s largely unaffected by the price of memory products: monitors, keyboards, headsets, cooling hardware, networking hardware, and more.
But there’s another side of the story. Changes always cause ripple effects. Among other things, the memory shortage is changing the way that many builders evaluate motherboards. It’s shifting their priorities. Hardware specifications and BIOS features that boost memory compatibility, performance, and stability used to be “nice-to-haves” on many builders’ motherboard shopping checklists. In 2026, those features are not only finding new relevance, but they’re serving as crucial tools in the hands of builders who need to make the most out of non-ideal memory configurations.
A quick look back at the “old” normal
Without spending too much time looking in the rear-view mirror, it’s worth taking a moment to reflect on just how much things have changed since the memory shortage hit.

I’ll apologize in advance for any FOMO that I might be causing here, but it’s safe to say that the folks who built a PC in the summer of 2025 had fantastic timing. They got in when the getting was good, as far as memory was concerned. The DDR5 market had matured nicely past a few initial growing pains. Memory kits at the “sweet spot” of price, performance, and capacity were readily available. Higher-end kits featuring more bandwidth, bolstered capacity, or both had dropped enough in price that many builders were happy to consider the prospect of investing a little more to get longer-term value.
Since they had so many options, there were certain memory-related hurdles that builders just didn’t have to worry about before the memory shortage. Mostly, the kits they bought just worked. They didn’t have to fight to find one on their motherboard’s QVL. They could count on an easy installation and optimization experience. They were likely to have a perfectly stable experience with their memory without fussing with voltages or timings. Optimizing kits was incredibly easy, too. In most instances, builders could open up the UEFI, tap the EXPO or XMP button, and trust that everything was good to go.
Why today’s builders are re-evaluating their priorities
When purchasing, installing, and optimizing your memory kit is that easy, advanced motherboard features and tools related to memory might seem more like pleasant extras rather than strict necessities. But many of today’s builders don’t have the luxury of treating all motherboards as relatively interchangeable when it comes to memory support. They need boards capable of handling circumstances that builders in 2025 largely didn’t even have to consider.
We’re talking here about the non-ideal memory configurations. The kits and configurations that we’d ordinarily advise you to avoid. All else being equal, we’d steer you away from installing a single DIMM in your system. We’d point you toward kits with an XMP or EXPO profile rather than industry standard “green” DIMMs. And mismatched memory? Memory that’s almost but not quite stable after overclocking? Kits that skimp on the heatspreaders?
We’ve never recommended these memory configurations for most builders, and for good reason, but times have changed. You might be considering one of these options, not out of preference, but out of necessity. If you need to build or upgrade a PC in 2026, you need options other than sitting and waiting for the market to change. And that might mean considering memory kits or modules that you might have passed over without thought a year ago.
