PC won’t boot? Q-LED and Q-CODE turn your biggest PC building fear into a simple fix

You’ve just assembled your PC, double-checked your work, plugged in your peripherals, and now it’s the moment of truth. It’s time to turn it on. If you’re like many of us, you might feel a mixture of excitement and anxiety in this moment. What if the PC won’t boot? A PC requires many separate components to all work in concert, and something as simple as a forgotten cable can prevent a freshly built PC from booting.

We’ll maintain that building a PC is easier than ever, but even today there are odd problems that can crop up. Most can be fixed on the spot. While there are times when troubleshooting a PC involves an RMA or a repair, more often than not the issue comes down to a component that needs to be reseated or a cable that needs to be connected.

Those fixes don’t require advanced knowledge or expertise, but without clear information, you’re mostly just left to retrace your steps, examining every cable and component until you find an obvious problem. To give you an easier pathway, we offer a range of diagnosis tools on our motherboards. Features vary by model, but two of our most common are Q-LED and Q-CODE.

Q-LED helps you escape the labyrinth of guesswork

When you power on your PC, the board immediately initiates a Power-On Self-Test, or POST. It runs through an internal checklist, actively verifying that all your critical components are present and ready for action. It queries the CPU, checks the memory (DRAM), polls the graphics card (VGA), and looks for a bootable device. Only after it confirms every part is ready does the system proceed to load your operating system. If any of these checks fail, the process halts, leaving you with a machine that won’t boot.

In the past, diagnosing a POST failure was a cryptic ritual requiring you to decipher a series of beeps from a tiny speaker — a part most modern PC cases no longer even include. Q-LED is much easier. One of our most fundamental Q-Design innovations, Q-LED is a cluster of four labeled LEDs, one each for CPU, DRAM, VGA, and BOOT.

If your motherboard finds an issue with a component, it halts the POST process and illuminates the related LED. That single, steady light gives you a starting point for troubleshooting. If it illuminates the DRAM LED, for example, you should start your troubleshooting process by removing, cleaning, and re-installing your memory modules.

Q-CODE equips you with even more information

Q-LED saves you from a lot of guess-and-check work during those moments when you need to troubleshoot your PC, but perhaps you’d prefer to have even more detailed information in the event of a problem. After all, there’s only so much that can be communicated by four on-or-off LEDs.

That’s where ASUS Q-CODE comes in. Most often found on the higher-end ASUS motherboard preferred by experienced PC builders, Q-CODE is a small display on your motherboard. It provides you with a 2-digit error code should your PC encounter an error during POST. Q-CODE provides the most probable cause of an error code as a troubleshooting. The actual cause may vary from case to case.

Broadly speaking, Q-CODEs are standardized across our motherboards, but there are some differences. Use your motherboard’s manual for a precise explanation of each Q-CODE. Q-CODE has one more trick up its sleeve. After a successful POST, modern versions of Q-CODE will switch into system monitoring mode and display your CPU temperature in real-time. This gives you an easy way to track temperatures, all without installing additional software. If you find it distracting or unnecessary, you can turn off this feature in your motherboard’s UEFI.
