The mini PC showdown: choosing the muscle for your agentic AI lab

The landscape of artificial intelligence is currently undergoing a fundamental shift. We’re moving away from the era of AI that merely chats and into an era of autonomous agents that work for you. In this new paradigm, AI transforms from an online chat partner to a set of experts, researchers, and assistants that live on your hardware.

Part of what’s so exciting about agentic AI is that it’s possible today with standard PC hardware. You don’t have to wait for some far-off future empowered by hoped-for hardware innovations. Today’s PC hardware is ready to help you automate facets of your personal and professional life. People are putting laptops, mini PCs, desktop PCs, even PC gaming handhelds to work as control centers for agentic AI.

All that said, agentic AI workloads are different from other PC use cases. Agentic AI is most useful when it’s always running and available, but not every PC is designed with always-on use in mind. Hardware requirements are different, too. The amount of memory that you need for running a few browser windows and an Excel spreadsheet is vastly different from what you need to have an agent capable of following in your footsteps throughout a full workday. And even after you’ve broken free of memory limitations, there are concerns with compute power, cooling, and fast storage space to reckon with.

Along the way, we’ll help you understand what’s possible with the different tiers of mini PCs available to you today and make some specific recommendations for hardware configurations.

Why are mini PCs so popular for agentic AI?

Mini PCs stand out from other options due to their surprisingly small size, but at the end of the day they’re still PCs. You can use a desktop PC or laptop to run agentic AI, too, with pros and cons for each option.

Check out online discussion, though, and you’ll see many people specifically recommending mini PCs to anyone building an agentic AI platform from scratch. Partly, it’s due to their compact, unobtrusive form factor. Since you’re best off running your agentic AI platform running on a separate device from your primary PC, you probably want a machine that’s not going to take up much space in your home. A mini PC fits that bill nicely. Additionally, these PCs are very power efficient. Even if your mini PC is running continuously, it’s not likely to significantly affect your electricity bill.

To be fair, there are reasons why you might consider other PC form factors instead. Desktop PCs stand out for their upgradability, giving you the option to beef up compute capabilities through desktop-class graphics cards and premier CPUs. They support the largest storage and memory arrays in the consumer PC space. However, they will take up more space in your home. Laptops offer all-in-one convenience, and their built-in battery provides resilience against the odd power outage, but laptops aren’t designed for always-on operation by default. You’ll need to adjust some Windows settings and make sure the system is getting the cooling it needs for sustained agentic AI workloads.

Setting performance expectations: the cloud is still king, but local AI gives you control, cost savings, and privacy

At this point, you might be wondering how it is that a compact mini PC, a device small enough to hold in the palm of your hand, can replicate the agentic AI performance that people are getting through cloud-based subscription. How can a mini PC compete with a data center?

The short answer is that it can’t. Access to frontier models and the reasoning capabilities they provide still requires a subscription to services like Claude Opus, Gemini, or GPT-5.5.

But those cloud-based services have their drawbacks, too. Agentic AI requires many more tokens than standard AI use, and that can lead to unexpectedly high costs for users running agentic AI through a cloud-based API. They require your data to live in the cloud and they require a constant internet connection, both of which can be a non-starter for many users.

A mini-PC with a deep pool of system memory can run surprisingly large models, albeit more slowly than a server could. But for a task that you’re happy to have run in the background while you’re working on other things, that isn’t necessarily a big limitation.

Unless you opt for a specialized mini PC with a discrete GPU, you’ll be leaning on your CPU and system memory for your workflows, and an NPU is specialized to run AI-related operations efficiently.

Second, and perhaps most importantly, get a healthy amount of system memory. Larger quantities of memory will allow you to run larger models with larger context windows, allowing for more advanced reasoning, longer-running conversations, and tasks that require your agents to keep substantial quantities of data in memory. You can run a very efficient and small LLM on a mini PC with 16GB of RAM, but 32GB will prove its value very quickly. Advanced users should consider even more.
