Unlocking your bootloader allows you to put custom software onto your device. Many developers have created custom ROMs and have had to hack their way into the ZenFone 2 to make this available to powerusers in the community.

Now, unlocking the bootloader is as easy as downloading the utility, installing it, and running it.

    Installed the APK to unlock bootloader from Asus’ website. I have the inverter Asus logo. I am unable use faatboot, I get the unluck successful….reboot in 5 seconds.
    This defeats the purpose of using the unlock tool if I cannot do anything with the phone. I cannot root it, I cannot change the recovery, I cannot change the OS. Is the bootloader really unlocked?
    I tried to load via adb sideload, nothing works.

  10. I can’t seem to get anything to save to my sd card through the phone itself..any tips on of this bootloader would let me do that? I’ve already tried the Asus custom settings and it doesn’t work.. also there’s half of my Rom that is unused but it won’t let anything save. It says system reserved space.. any help or solutions would be great

    Now I cannot go to fastboot mode it always fails and reboots
    please update us when you find a fix !
    Even a fix that will not unlock the boot loader just allow fasboot not to reboot will be great
    I can add that while I tried this I had 2 Sims installed and an 8 GB SD card.. if it helps.

I understand unlocking the bootloader voiding the warranty, even though I don’t agree with it (the theory supposedly being that installing an alternate ROM could actually cause physical damage to the HW, which is highly unlikely – even ‘bricking’ a device by flashing it is usually just putting it into a state where you can’t get a response from it to reflash or recover without resorting to JTAG or other extreme methods)

    However, I really do think Asus hasn’t really thought through this position on no more software updates just because you’ve unlocked the bootloader. Obviously I could see no SW updates if you’re running a modded ROM (and likely if you are, you don’t WANT those SW updates at that time), but if you want to go back to stock and check out the latest release of official from Asus you should be able to. Just because the bootloader is unlocked should not prevent you from re-flashing the stock ROM and then getting Asus SW updates. By taking this position, Asus is essentially saying once you leave our SW you can’t come back. That’s damned short sighted if you ask me, since it prevents people who maybe want to give the stock Asus SW a 2nd chance from doing so.

    • Hey Robby – Sorry to hear that you ran into that issue! We should be getting an OTA soon that will help to fix the reboot issue. Since you can ADB sideload, wait for the OTA. Level99’s method seemed to work for most, even myself who admittedly isn’t the most technical person. We also can’t release a zip with TWRP.

        • Hi Robby, I wish I had a timetable for you. The HQ team understands how important this next OTA is and will release it – I want to say in the next week or so. They still need me to test it based on the unlock error, but they haven’t sent me the OTA. If I find that it’s still causing some issues, it might delay it.

            Just loaded the newest WW update. The only change is that now when I hold the vol up key I no longer get it to error out. It just always says unlock successful rebooting in 5.

      It might be that you have a couple conflicting SMS apps. Which do you use? If you don’t use the stock “Messaging” app, and use something like Google Messenger, the Messaging app will still show that you have SMS unread. Is this your problem or something else?

      • I am only use asus messenger,i try to clean recovery mode but i can’t login to recovery mode with error notification, actually i want to use bootloader unlock but in the forum said if we had done with that we can’t upgrade our os anymore. By the way thank to your suggestion.

  33. ive had a problem with my recovery fron the day i bought the phone. whenever i try to boot into recovery i get error. i have to press volume up and power buttton which will take me to recovery. i unlocked my bootloader lastnight and i keep getting rebooting in 5 seconds . the ze551ml 2gb will not allow me to root or install another recovery to see if i can fix the issue of rebooting issue whenever i try to go into bootloader.

I must state that after using the “fastboot flash recovery recovery.img” command using android sdk tools. the phone says failed, permission required.. or something like that but when I disconnected and rebooted to recovery ..twrp recovery was actually installed even though it said it failed. i flashed the superuser zip file through twrp and it also rooted the phone beautifully without issue. now when i boot into recovery i no longer get an error message and no more boot loop when i boot into fastboot mode. i will now flash a custom rom and report my findings.. thanks to the xda developer guys also.

Only options are reboot then install from adb then install from micro SD card. WHY WHY WHY CANT I GET FDR OPTION OR WWIPE DATA OR THE OPTIONS PEOPLE AND BLOGS ALLAY TO?!?   43. I have a prepaid AT&T ZenFone 2E. Will this work the same for this phone as well? Is the 6.0 update scheduled for this phone at the same time or will it be left behind or later? I too am having problems on 5.0 with it being very slow and cumbersome even compared to my previous BLU Air.

  49. I tried to run the Unlock Device Tool app, but doesnt seem work. I didnt see the white splashscreen.
    Even worse, I can not go to fastboot (bootloader) mode, instead I see a black screen with a USB logo shown.
    Is there any way to get into fastboot/bootloader mode in my situation now?

  51. im not sure if this has been anawered already or not, i havent read the entire.thread yet but, is there a way to unlock thw bootloader on the Zenfone 2E ZE500CL, ive searches the internet and mostly find tos that help every model, except for mine. the few ive found that claim to be for the ZE500CL turn out to be for the 550 or 551…any information would be helpful.

  53. Just wondering what the current state of the boot loader unlock tool is. Have the issuses people were experiencing been resolved? If I run the tool on my ZenFone 2 now is it likely to cause problems, or is it working ok for most users?

    I fully accept the risk that comes with unlocking and I applaud ASUS for releasing it. It would be nice however if you could offer a way to restore it back to original condition. Is this possible?

  63. OK So U can not use the unlock from ASUS.
    Now How do I get the screen lock pattern to turn off? I called ASUS and we went thru the process but did not get it unlocked. This is the only thing in my way so if any of you have the answer, Instructions that I can follow I would be very grateful Zenforce2 4G-64K dual sim or a 128 k chip installed I love the phone and was getting rid of all the stuff I do not need and something froze the phone and I can not get past the screen lock no matter what pattern i try. all the items come up on screen but no access.     What is the meaning of this message from the Asus unlock app?:
    (UnlockApp_ze550ml_20150723.apk)

    “You do not have pin password to verify your device, do you still want to proceed?”

    This is a big fail as far as customer care is concerned. You spend about 10 000 legal words warning us of loss of our rights should we proceed to unlock, but you can’t afford more than 16 words to write a meaningful message for the actual unlock?

    Please advise.
